I Love You...You Love Me - But Who The Hell Asked Margaret Wente?

Apparently Marg was not happy enough with the "welfare ghetto" comments. She has stuck her face back in the window long enough to shout "and another thing - you're fat too!" Sticks and Stones Marg.

I find her phrasing particularly humourous: "I like Newfoundlanders, I really do, but St. John's weighs in with more fat people per capita than anywhere else in the country (36 per cent, versus Toronto's slender 16)".

Where I have heard that before? 'I like Newfoundlanders I Really Do'?!

Was it when she said: "I like Newfoundlanders. I really do. But their sense of victimhood is unmatched"... or perhaps when she said "I like Newfoundlanders, I really do. Where would we be without Rex Murphy and Mary Walsh and Rick Mercer? On the other hand, they left" ... or this recent one "I like Newfoundlanders, I really do, but St. John's weighs in with more fat people per capita than anywhere else in the country."

So we can draw a couple of conclusions from Margaret: 1. She likes Newfoundland, no really she does! and 2. Toronto is not only the centre of the universe but boasts only 16% fat people. Send them the Medal - the contest is over! Margaret, may I introduce you to Mr. Toronto (below). He has something in his coffee cup you will be particularly interested in. Me thinks I have a reason why T'rontonians are so damn trim... but it wouldn't be polite to tell you about it here.

... and give me back my bloody hat - I said you could try it on, not adopt it...

My guess is that the effort it requires to breathe the Toronto air would take weight off any poor soul that has to suck in.

Don't forget that Toronto's crackhead population was included when tallying up the skinny folks. Oh, yeah... And the gang members that regularly run from the cops. ;-)

LOL I have to agree with both of you on that. Good stuff :)

What a patronizing comment from the polluted lungs and mouth of this sooty air head. Last year it was estimated that at least 1000 people die earlier than expected because of smog in Toronto. It seems like Margaret is showing symptoms of smog city attitude syndrome..

"Patronizing" is a good description. You can see that patronizing air in the look on her face (I thought it was in need of a hat). What is sad though is not that Marg chooses this tone but that it actually sells papers. She is simply the face of a common attituden amongst our "National" brothers and sisters. Trully Sad.

Creative study skewed results at best. It was only the other day that a study determ8ned NL had the oldest population of all of the provinces per capita. Now if the study did a break down according to age and per capita I'm sure the results would look a whole lot different.

We could all lose a few pounds so in the end if it doesn't further undermine our self esteem it should be a wake up call. But as for the study I think I would have to look further into who commissioned it and with what agenda. If there isn't one then it could be chaulked up to ignorance and poor work ethic at disregarding population break down.

Hey we should use it to our adantage and ask for more access to public fitness facilities or construction of some if none exist.

Good idea Ex-pat, I think a tax break incentive for people who possess gym memberships might work. Unfortunately for many areas of NL there are no gym facilities. Marystown has had a shipyard since the '60s, a large fishplant, malls, etc., and now a dimishing population of about 6500-7000, but no YMCA, or any gym. In the meantime improving the food choices that kids have available in schools is a good start.
